PRESENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

Phylogeny of the Cyclanthaceae based on DNA sequences

[Asplundia sp.]Cyclanthaceae comprises c. 230 neotropical species in twelve genera. The evolution in this family is generally considered to have taken place along two lineages, represented by the subfamilies Carludovicoideae and the monotypic Cyclanthoideae. This scenario has been questioned, however, but a thorough phylogenetic approach to solve this issue has at present not been attempted, largely due to lack of suitable data.
The Carludovicoideae is informally subdivided into the Asplundia (seven genera) and Sphaeradenia (four genera) group. A phylogenetic analysis based on morphological and anatomical data suggests that the former is paraphyletic, whereas the latter is supported as monophyletic. The relationships at generic level are still largely uncertain, however, especially among the genera included in the Asplundia group. Furthermore, this analysis also indicates that the large genus Asplundia may be paraphyletic, an hypothesis that has to be further investigated.
The phylogeny of the family Cyclanthaceae will be reconstructed, mainly at generic and subgeneric levels, using sequence data from multiple regions. The results will, among other things, be used for a formal classification above generic level, and discussions regarding evolution of structural characters.

 

Taxonomic revisions of Ludovia and Stelestylis (Cyclanthaceae)

The small cyclanth genera Steletylis (at present 4 spp.) and Ludovia (at present 3 spp.) will be taxonomically revised, mainly based on morphological analyses.

 

Systematics of the Basellaceae, with special emphasis on phylogeny and biogeography

[Anredera tucumanensis]This project aims at reconstructing the phylogeny at specific level in the pantropical and subtropical family Basellaceae (c. 20 species). The analyses are based on morphological and anatomical data, and will be supplemented with molecular data (see below). The obtained results will form the foundation for revised generic circumscriptions and biogeographical analyses.

 

Phylogeny and systematic position of the Basellaceae

[Anredera baselloides]The pantropical and subtropical family Basellaceae is supposedly monophyletic, and comprises c. 20 species. The genera of this family are at present unsatisfactorily circumscribed, but phylogeny estimations at the species level are in progress (see above). The nearest relationship of Basellaceae has been a much debated question, where recent studies indicate that it share supposedly derived features with certain genera of a paraphyletic Portulacaceae. Previous attempts, using morphological, anatomical, and to some extent molecular data, to clarify this issue have been inconclusive.
This project aims at reconstructing phylogenies of the Basellaceae and supposedly related taxa, based on multiple sources of molecular data. Obtained hypotheses of relationships will be used to establish the systematic position of Basellaceae.
